Two Seniors, JaMeer Turner and Godwin Mensah, attended an event with Ms. Shuman in London, OH called "Build My Future Central Ohio".
Build My Future was a one-day event for High School Juniors and Seniors to explore construction careers. Interactive learning labs provided students with hands-on opportunities to experience what their future careers can look like. Activities included equipment operation, installation challenges, and education displays.
The goal was to help students understand the enormous variety of careers available in this larger industry and the huge opportunities available to them right out of high school.
Both students got hands-on experience in the interactive learning labs to allow them to feel (for a moment) what it was like to perform these jobs. All of the exhibitors were fantastic in explaining their jobs to the students and guiding them through actually being able to do things like:
Welding
Soldering
Measuring and cutting PVC and Copper Pipe
Sawing
Building window frames
Caulking
Painting
Connecting Pipe
"Driving" an excavator (spinning and raising and lowering the scoop)
Putting waterproofing barrier on a wall
Exhibitors also provided information regarding paid internships and employment opportunities with their companies. Ms. Shuman says that it was a very worthwhile experience, and glad they went.
